Stapel 2026
A small sculpture, one day, one session. Five rough chunks of unfired clay stacked on the workbench, leaning a few degrees to the left, about fifty centimeters tall. The clay is dark, asymmetric, fingerprints visible. The stack stands by balance, not by joint.
The work is not the finished stack. The work is the act of stacking, documented in five steps: empty bench with a single block, the block divided into pieces, pieces beginning to stack, my hand placing the fifth element, the stack standing alone.
I usually make work that closes a box, that hides the cut, that lets the room go quiet. This one does the opposite. The material rises into the room. The body is visible in the fourth image: half profile, sleeves rolled, weight on the front hand. I needed the body in the work today, not because the body is the subject, but because keeping it out had become its own architecture.
Foundation reference: Eva Hesse, less for the materials than for the willingness to let a piece stand at the threshold where it could collapse. Andy Goldsworthy peripherally for the balance logic, not the outdoor stone romance. The setup stays inside the atelier, on the same grey workbench that carries the other current works.
Phase 1 is the endform. The fifth image closes the sequence. No follow-up phase announced. If a Stapel-2 ever comes, it will be its own work, not a continuation.
