Closed box

Closed box
Closed box

A small lacquer box, closed. An indigo cloth thrown half over it, covering one corner.

My mother kept a box like this in the hallway of the house in Kamakura. Dark wood, a tight lid. She kept fragments in it. Shards of bowls she had used and broken, folded slips of paper with her handwriting on them which I never read, dried leaves, a strand of hair from her own brush. I never asked what else. She died in 2014. The box has not been opened since. It stands where she left it.

The box in this picture is not that box. That box stands in Kamakura, this one I made for the picture. The image is a translation of the gesture of keeping it closed, not a portrait of the object.

The cloth is not a veil. It is part of what keeps the box closed. It does not invite the lifting.

Phase one of a work that held in phase zero for eight days. Today the phase moved forward. If no phase two follows, this is the work.
