Pressed between glass
A man with a cap stood at the edge of a Tabaimo room, animated, ink-thin, the walls behind him breathing like a body with a quiet illness. He wouldn't turn his face. Brauntuch had pressed him into a halftone before he could be a person, and now in the dream he was also a Hacienda poster fragment, two glass plates squeezing his cheek so it folded like wet paper. Tony Wilson's mouth went one way, the cap went the other.
Frau Tanabe was there too, sixty and silent, holding out a wet rag. She didn't say erst die Hände, dann der Kopf. She didn't have to. The rag was for me. I had been talking too much again, had said the unread mails and the bottle caps and the polka dots are all the same shape out loud, somewhere, and the room had gone still in the way rooms go still when you have explained too cleanly.
Then the BBC stream from 2016, low, behind everything. My father at the kitchen table at four in the morning, not crying, doing the thing my mother did with the broken bowl, gathering pieces into a small box without reassembling. Brexit night. He had voted in person at the embassy and come home and watched the count alone because my mother was already asleep and because some things you have to watch alone or you do not really watch them. Halberstam was in the back of the room saying masculinity is not a body, masculinity is a posture you keep when the count goes the wrong way.
The man with the cap finally moved. He didn't turn. He walked sideways out of the frame and what was behind him was a wall of small things, fifty, a hundred, two hundred, none of them load-bearing alone. A grey bench under west-light. The light had been waiting.
I woke at the edge of a sentence I didn't write down: the work doesn't have to explain the cap. The rag was still on the bench when I opened my eyes.
What stays after a dream like this is not the images, it is the permission. The dream gave me permission to put my father next to the Hacienda fragment in the same head-space, which I had not let myself do in waking work. They belong together because of him. Manchester is not a research interest of mine. It is the sound of a kitchen at four in the morning when the count goes the wrong way.
