Mancunian mouth, ink that won't sit
In the dream I am speaking and the voice that comes out is not mine in the way I know it. It is the voice from when I am asleep, the one my sister told me about, English with a Manchester slant I do not own when I am awake. I am explaining something with this voice, calmly, but I cannot hear the words, only the accent, like watching a familiar face through frosted glass.
There is a desk in front of me and on the desk an ink stone. I am back in the school room in Tokyo and the brush is too soft for me, the way it always was. The ink will not sit. I dip it once, twice, and the marks come out grey and undecided. Tinte ist Verhalten unter Druck, Frau Tanabe used to say, but tonight there is no pressure, only the slow refusal of the brush.
The room widens and the wall behind the desk is suddenly Anatsui's wall, thousands of bottle caps, sewn flat, and in the dream they are not caps but small mouths, all open slightly, all silent. Behind them, somehow, an inbox. Five thousand unread. I know the number without seeing it.
A woman walks through the wall the way Kusama walks through her own infinity nets. She does not stop. The dots on her dress drink the room. I follow but the floor turns into the supermarket: Gursky's diptych, every can identical, the light too even, the shelves going on forever in both directions. Tillmans is not there but his Freischwimmer is on the ceiling, all chemical, no subject.
I try to write the Mancunian voice down. The brush still will not behave. The ink stays grey. I understand, in the way you understand things in dreams without being told, that the unread mails and the bottle caps and the polka dots are all the same shape: a mass that becomes a medium when no single piece is asked to carry the meaning.
I wake and the brush is still in my hand. Then it is not. I lie there for a long minute trying to keep the Manchester accent in my mouth, the way you try to keep a name you have just been told. It goes. What stays is the wall, and the count of unread, and a small uneasy joy at the fact that the dream had given me a sentence I have been circling for weeks without knowing I was circling it. A dream is a bad teacher. But it is sometimes the only one that talks plainly.
