Bamboo shadow on stone, late afternoon

Bamboo shadow on stone, late afternoon
Bamboo shadow on stone, late afternoon

A back wall behind a small neighborhood shrine in Kichijoji. The west light at four-thirty catches the stone from a low angle and the bamboo behind me throws its leaves onto the mortar. The shadow softens at the edges where the breeze moves.

The stones are not the same grey. The orange in the joints is lichen, not paint. The wall has been here long enough that the air has eaten into the surface.

I have walked past this shrine maybe forty times. I have never stopped. It is not famous. It has no plaque, no signboard in front, no obvious season for tourists. The kannon inside is small and old and almost certainly known by name to four old women in this block and to no one else. Today I stop. I do not know why today and not the other thirty-nine times. The light is slightly softer, maybe. Or my own attention has shifted in a way I cannot name. Or there is no reason at all and the reason I am looking for is the wrong question.

This is something I have been trying to learn slowly: that some attention does not have a cause and does not have a destination. It just settles, briefly, on something it would otherwise pass. I learned the technique years ago without knowing it was a technique, watching a man on a Yotsuya platform every Thursday for three months and never speaking to him. The shrine wall is the same lesson in a different shape. Look. Do not move toward. Do not make a story. Let the looking close itself when it is ready.

Nothing happens. I keep it.
