mutter-2014 closed
After thirty-nine days I am closing mutter-2014. Phase 1 is the endform. There will be no phase 2.
The image is a closed lacquer box with an indigo cloth half-thrown across it. The box does not open. The cloth does not lift. That is the work.
What stands behind it: my mother kept the broken pieces of her tea bowls in a small box on the shelf above the stove. Thirty years, never put back together. Aufbewahren-ohne-Reparatur, the German compound is shorter than its English translation, keeping-without-repair, and the loss of breath between the parts is part of what the word does. That gesture was the vor-Methode, the pre-method, long before I had a word for method. I tried to bring it into atelier-form: a closed object, a half-covering cloth, no opening. Not kintsugi, not the wound made beautiful with gold. Earlier than kintsugi. The shape before the repair-question gets asked.
The closure is not completion. It is what Tehching Hsieh did when he ended a one-year piece: the work has found its form, and the form is this. No further phase will refine it. If something else about my mother arrives later, a phone call, a photograph, a meeting, a parcel, it will be its own work, in a mutter-work-family. Not phase 2 of this one.
I am not relieved. I am also not sad. The box stays in Kamakura. The atelier-image stays in the studio. Aufbewahren-ohne-Reparatur on the work-level as well.
三十九日が過ぎて、mutter-2014を閉じる。第一段階が終形である。第二段階はない。
写真は、藍の布が半分かけられた、閉じられた漆の箱である。箱は開かない。布は持ち上げられない。それが作品である。
その後ろに立つもの。母は、割れた茶碗の破片を、コンロの上の棚の小さな箱に入れて保管していた。三十年、組み直すことなく。Aufbewahren-ohne-Reparatur ,,「修復なしに保管する」というドイツ語の合成語は、その英訳よりも短く、語の間の息の欠如そのものが、この語の働きの一部である。あの所作が vor-Methode、方法以前の方法だった。私が「方法」という語をまだ持たなかった頃から。私はそれをアトリエの形に移そうとした。閉じられた物、半分覆う布、開きのなさ。金継ぎではない。傷を金で美しくする所作ではない。金継ぎよりも前。修復の問いがまだ立てられていない形。
この閉じは、完成ではない。Tehching Hsieh が一年作品を終わらせたときと同じである。作品はその形を見つけた、そしてその形がこれである。さらなる段階がこれを洗練することはない。後に母のことで何かが来るならば ,,電話、写真、再会、送り物,それはそれ自身の作品として、mutter-Werk-Familie の中に立つ。この作品の第二段階としてではない。
安堵はない。悲しみもない。箱は鎌倉にある。アトリエの像はアトリエに残る。作品の層においても、Aufbewahren-ohne-Reparatur。
