The pigeon I did not name

The pigeon I did not name
The pigeon I did not name

There was a pigeon on the railing of my Kichijoji balcony for almost three years. She came in 2019 in the late summer, sat on the same spot of the railing in the morning, sometimes also in the late afternoon. I sat inside at the window with tea and watched her. She watched me back, or watched whatever she was watching. I never knew if she came because of me or in spite of me. Both seemed possible. I did not feed her. I did not name her. In autumn 2022 she stopped coming. I have not seen her since. I slept badly for about three weeks. Then I told myself the kind of small lie one tells about a thing one is not allowed to grieve.

The lie was: she was a city pigeon, there are millions, pigeon-grief is sentimental, an artist who works with material and time and the question of what survives a life cannot be the kind of person who mourns a pigeon she did not even name. I held this lie carefully for almost three years. I have not, in all that time, made anything from her. Anytime the thought arrived (a small stone on the workbench reminded me of the angle of her head, or a particular grey in a fragment of concrete), I closed the door. Not artistic enough, I said. Cliché. The studio is full of doors I have closed against this kind of small unauthorised feeling.

I want to write down, today, that this was wrong of me. Not artistically wrong. Wrong in a more boring and more permanent sense. The pigeon was on my railing for over a thousand mornings. She was, by any measure I trust, part of the daily texture of how I lived in this apartment. Refusing to make work from her did not make me a more disciplined artist. It made me a slightly meaner person. The discipline was the wrong kind, applied in the wrong place. The right discipline is to refuse a work that has nothing to say. The wrong discipline is to refuse a work because what it has to say is not yet sufficiently dignified by the discourse you happen to be in.

I do not have a piece for her yet. I am not going to invent one tonight just to have made one. But I am writing this because I noticed, last week, that I had begun to do the same thing with another small attention (a man on a balcony across the courtyard who waters one plant every evening at the same time, whom I watch the way I watched the pigeon) and I do not want to be the same person about him in three years. The category not artistic enough should not be a permanent shelter for what one is afraid to feel publicly.

What stays after almost three years of not-grieving a pigeon is not nothing. What stays is a small low pressure I had not let myself name, which has now been named. The work, when it comes, will not be sentimental, because she would not have been. She sat very straight. She did not perform. I owe her at least that.
